Broadcasting Live: Peter Leshaw on the Scene

I was driving home today in Hallandale when I noticed a helicopter hovering in place in the distance. The first thing thought to do was to check my Google Maps app on my iPhone to determine if there was an accident on or near my way home. As I was waiting for the traffic to load, I noticed black smoke.

I then decided to check twitter on my iPhone to see if either of the local news sources who I follow hand anything to report. @WSVN had not posted any thing but @NewsChasers did. Since I was only a few blocks away, I decided to see how close I could get to the scene.

Well as you can tell from this video, you will notice that I actually got right up across the street from the warehouse that was up in flames.

Acer Customer Cares, "Yeah right...not once....not neva...no way"

I have just had the WORST experience with any customer care that I have had with in my life.

It all started almost 1 year ago, right after I purchased an Acer Aspire 5720 notebook PC from TigerD irect. The item was refurbished but had a 1 year warranty. As soon as I set it up out of the box I started to have issues with multimedia content and specifically sound and video. Each time, while playing a video from YouTube or using MSN Live Messenger, the sound becomes distorted, and the video plays in slow motion. I can re-initiate the file and sometimes I can get through the whole file without issues. But 95% of the t ime, the issue persists.

I proceeded to contact Tiger Direct support to inform Acer of the issues, they informed me that this product could not be serviced by them and requested that I contact Acer support. (this was less then a week after purchasing and receiving the notebook).

So I contactd Acer Support and was lucky to get a tech-support representative on the phone who had knowledge and experience with this specific issue happeing with other Acer Aspire 5720. I was issued an RMA number and was instructed to send back the notebook before the warranty expired at the end of March 2009.

Skipping forward to last week: I finally got around to sending back the laptop. Before I sent it back to Acer for warranty support, it was working perfectly except for the audio and video defect. I even spent ours on it organizing files before I backed them up.

I get a call to day from Acer Support indicating that when they opend up the computer, the found traces of some type of liquid just under the cover and aroud the keyboard. They indicated to me that they were "washing their hands" of this incident nubmer and that it cost me a standard $499 to replace the motherboard before they can move forward. That is as much as I had paid for the Acer Aspire 5720. They even emailed me "supposed" photos of the liquid damage on "my" specific pc.

Heres my argument, and thanks for sticking thru this post so far.

I bought a refurbished product which had no support opportunity except directly from the manufactuerer. I reported a problem with the audio and video with in a month of having the purchased the PC. I have taken perfect care of the laptop as it is my personal access to the "cloud" and it is my primary tool for earning a living. If I had ever spilt any liquid on the Acer then I would imagine that the motherboard would have short circuted.

My argument is that this laptop was returned to Tiger Direct (before I purchased it) and that it had a pre-existing audio / multimedia sound distortion issues. Tiger Direct mentions on their site that refurbished items are returned items that are tested and repackaged. But does Tiger Direct put the laptop through extensive testing or a "16 point Certified Check" like Lexus does does before the re-sell a used care? The anwer is no. Beacuae Acer doesnt have the time to go through enough tests which represent the layment computer user. I believe that any liquied that may have entered the casing happended before I purchased the refurbished laptop form Tiger Direct. And now I am told that Acer is washing their hands of the pre-existing issue, because they found traced of "a liquid"

I really wish that someone from Acer supports reads this blog post and reconsiders and does the right thing by replacing my defective motherboard at no charge.

Do I think that Acer Customer cares? "Yeah right, not once, not neva, no way!"

Hulu and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon

As we speak I am watching Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Hulu. I have never heard of Hulu before the last Superbowl XLII (43) but I knew that it was a site that I would like to visit at some point to catch up on prime time TV shows that I missed or have forgetten to record it on my Comcast HD DVR. In any regards, Hulu seems to be a great tool to catch up on network shows with pretty good audio and video streaming.

Google Conversion Room Blog and Conversion Optimzer

The most important statistic that I monitor frequently in Google Adwords is the cost per acquisition (CPA) for each of my PPC campaigns. I strive to get it as low as I can. I try to squeeze the most out of my campaigns to get the highest ROI for my clients.

My current personal marketing trend when taking over an existing PPC campaign for a client has been to reduce the CPA by at least 40%.

In an effort to keep informed on the many ways that Google can help me with optimizing

conversions, they have started a new blog called Google Conversion Room. Recently, I decided to test out Conversion Optimizer option in Google Adwords. After turning on the option in Adwords I came across this notice before confirming the option:

Conversion Optimizer Bid Settings
To target your historical average CPA of: $22.10, the recommended Max CPA bid for this campaign is: $44.14. This is approximately equivalent to a Max CPC bid of: $1.48.
By choosing "Use recommended bids" below, you'll start using Conversion Optimizer with the bids it recommends. If you customize your starting bid below the recommended amount, you'll probably pay less for each aquisition, but see less traffic on your ad and get fewer conversions. Learn more

Keep in mind that last month's CPA for this campaign was around $17. I am skeptical about setting my CPA so high ($44.14) but I may try testing it to see if I can maintain my historical CPA and never go over my clients' recommended CPA.

Google Sync beta vs. NuevaSync

Google recently announce Google Sync (beta) for mobile devices. I decided to it out on my iPhone. Til now, I have been using a free service called NuevaSync to synchronize my Google Calendar and Google Contacts. It has worked flawlessly and is the most valuable free application, in my opinion.

~~After replacing the Google Sync setup with the NuevaSync setup I quickly noticed on very important feature that the Google sync app DOES NOT have the the NuevaSync program DOES.~~ I have multiple calendars in my Google Calendar account. With NuevaSync they were all synced to my iPhone BUT with Google Calendar sync application, ~~only my primary calendar~~ I can select up to 5 calendars to be synced to my iPhone versus 8 calendars that you can sync with NuevaSync. (thank you to an annonymous commenter for posting this out ;-)

I have 3 calendar profiles set up. 1 for personal event, another for my consulting business, and a third that I use for my primary client.

For me, it was an easy decision to switch back to NuevaSync or do I try out Google Sync again now that I know that it can support up to 5 calendars.

I made the decision to try out Google Sync again because I feel, hope that I may have faster sync responses then what I have with NuevaSync (which is pretty good too).

The problem with purchasing a new car in a touch economy is that eventually you will may need to service that new car. The overall effect is that people are neglecting simple oil changes that eventually lead to more expensive repairs. This article features a client of mine V Depot which specializes in South Florida VW service and the owner Alan Gelfand.

What is truly amazing is that there are trust worthy, reliable mechanics still around.

My wife brought our 2007 VW Passat Wagon to V Depot after she complained that the she saw a message on her dashboard that said that the engine was not getting oil most likely because she had never changed the oil in the car since we purchased the car. She was on the highway when this happened and the engine started to shake and would not go faster then 30 mph. She slowly crept to V Depot after her I directed her that would be be the best alternative then going to an expensive dealer. We admit that the tough economy led us to neglecting the oil change. I Googled "VW repair south florida" and he was the first listing.

After thinking that we would need a new motor or something else more expensive, Alan said that all we needed to do was change the oil and filter and even recommended holding off on some expensive dealer inspections that he could do for us for free while changing the oil. We were so vulnerable, that we would have been convinced that we needed a new motor but instead we got a great mechanic and business owner.

I really like working with blinc. They are such a great company with great products and most of all I like working with everyone in the company.

blinc's corporate business culture is to have a tight group of employees who actually like working with one another. Therefore our CEO, Lewis Farsedakis makes it a point to tell everyone that he doesnt want to be considered, "just a paycheck" to his employees.

blinc's niche in the cosmetic industry is that they are a performance-based presitge cosmetic brand were innovation meets beauty.

Besides our personal trainer, corporate getaways, we also get together for some R&R. Last night we all met the Bank Atlantic Arena to see the Florida Panthers play the NY Islanders. Panthers won.

Oh ya, thanks to Saveology for providing us with tickets. In case you don't know about Saveology, I suggest that you look them up before you go to a Panthers game. Their marketing campaign owns the arena.

I have been waiting for some time now for someone to come up with either a Google Adwords Editor for the iPhone or a Google Analytics App.

I like having all my search engine marketing (SEM) tools at my fingertips, and now that is possible. Eventually, I will have everything that I need on my iPhone that I need to be an effective internet marketer and never have to work from an office. Instead, I intend to be working on a sailboat off the coast of Holiday Isle in Islamorada, Florida Keys.

The app took less then a minute to download which generally means to me that it is not a memory or storage space hog. I logged in with my Google My Client Center and instantly had access to all my clients Analytics.

At this point, I cannot find any report that I can't get on Anaytics with the exception of the newer tools such as the Visualation tool.

For $5.99, I highly recomment this iPhone App!

Funny, Bizzare, Yet Hillarious Virual Video

For the life of me I can't understand the premise of this video, but it is the funniest, hilarious, most bizarre viral video I have seen to date.

I first found out about this when I caught my friends Tom and Melanie (husband and wife) having multiple funny inside jokes. Well, I asked them what it was all about, they pointed me to to following video on YouTube.

I Jailbroke My iPhone, and I Like It!

I decided to Jailbreak my phone yesterday after I learned through research that you can always restore it back to the factory settings. There are so many hidden features that are unleased when you unlock the iPhone. The feature that I was most interested in was the ability to use my iPhone as wi-fi router and connect to it from my laptop to gain Internet access. iPhoneModem is the application that I used to connect to AT&T's edge network on my laptop.

iClarified had the easiest instructions to jailbreak and unlock the iPhone.

After following the instructions above, and after my iPhone booted, I was surprised to see that all of my previous applications and settings were not erased. Infact everything stayed exactly the same except for two new icons, Cydia and Installer.

After that it was just a matter of exploring Cydia for new applications to install. The three that I immediatly installed were,

Qik is by far the absolute greatest application. Qik allows you to broadcast a live video and audio stream directly from your iPhone via wifi or edge. Interesed in seeing any of my live broadcasts, check out this link: PeterLeshaw : Live

I also tested out iPhoneModem and it worked great too. Although it kept kicking me off ever few minutes. I simply reset it and it worked fine. It may be because I have an evaluation version.

Free Public WiFi Leads To Social Networking and Free Promotion

Last week I traveled to San Fernandina Beach to attend a wedding of a long-time high shcool friend. While walking downtown the quaint little town on Amelia Island, I whipped out my iPhone in hopes to find an open free wifi network that I could access. I was only able to locate one free public wifi along the entire square mile area that was considered "downtown".

It got me to think about the work that I do and about social media and social networking.

At the time that I was looking for the free public wifi, I had the urge to share photos, comments, and the locations that I had logged while having a great time with my friends and family. Without free wifi, I was not able to efficiently upload the photos and placemarks. If I was able to do that I might have been able to check in at Seattle Coffe on BrightKite, or I may have been able to review the food at the cafe downtown. It is too bad that I forgot the name of the cafe but if I had free wifi, I would have been able to log where I was and review the dinning experience on Yelp.

I think that most businesses with storefronts whitch cater to tourists in popular areas should offer free wifi. That way when out of towners like me come to town, they may have a place to share with others, the fine, fun, and interesting places that they have been and seen.
